Development Description

This mixed use scheme situated in the heart of the city centre was brought forward around the existing tower that was formerly the Bristol & West Building Society HQ. The development comprised a major regeneration of this area of the city with the 17 storey tower utilising an innovative cladding solution allowing for major improvements to the existing tower whilst recycling and existing building. Additional development comprised residential apartments and ground floor/first floor active uses.

Planning Process

The original scheme conception was to demolish the Bristol & West tower and replace it with a 20 storey new tower. This was resisted by the Local Planning Authority and stakeholders. Thereafter it was decided to reutilise the tower and provide a major revamp of its façade as well as internally. It is now home to a 4* hotel. Being an extremely sensitive site within a Conservation Area, and adjacent to the Bristol Docks there was great public interest in the emerging design and extensive stakeholder and public consultation took place before the applications were submitted.
