Size: 23,000 sq m

Project Summary

  • High quality large educational building delivered in a historically sensitive location
  • Large public realm improvements to Royal Fort Gardens
  • Significant archaeology as site of a Civil War Fort
  • Considerable stakeholder involvement

Development Description

The development comprised 25,000m2 of academic floorspace including state of the art laboratories and teaching spaces along with academic office space and research space. The mathematics building of some 6,000m2 created a focal point surrounded by public realm and subservient to the adjacent listed buildings. The scheme incorporated a mix of materials and building styles which were set within a new Public Realm.

Planning Process

Early stakeholder and public consultation was undertaken as well as a number of pre-application enquiries to the Local Authority. At each stage of the pre-application process, the design was exhibited to show how comments had been incorporated. Significant negotiation took place with Historic England and the Conservation Officers at Bristol City Council as well as with archaeologists given its sensitive location on the potential site of a Civil War Fort. Once submitted, the application was negotiated by CSJ Planning Consultants. The scheme gained consent in 2010 and the Life Sciences Building along with the Public Realm is now complete.
