The proposal comprised of the demolition of a 1980s block to the rear of a series of semi-detached Grade II Listed villas on Woodland, an arterial highway on the University Precinct. In lieu of this built form, a set of blocks were proposed which would contain teaching, research and social spaces all with flexible interchangeable uses. Alongside this, landscaping and car parking works were proposed. In addition, a glass infill entrance was proposed to exist between two of the villas. This would better connect the villas to the wider public realm. The site was located in a Conservation Area.
After a positive pre-application enquiry which involved a site visit by numerous member of the Council’s planning team, CSJ Planning submitted a comprehensive application package involving separate applications respecting the various elements of the proposals and the Conservation Area’s designation. A public consultation event helped inform this application. CSJ successfully negotiated issues of the University’s expansion, heritage and amenity impacts to gain consent.
