Development Description

The proposals comprised of a large new hospital block with a maximum height of 27 meters. The building was to be state of the art with low energy utilisation and high sustainability levels. With 90,000m2, the hospital was a major development and contained provisions for numerous important health departments. Space for 800 beds were included in the proposal. As well as health floorspace, a large multi-storey car parking was proposed as well as landscaping and associated public works. Community accessibility was a key part of the proposal. Once completed, the hospital provided significant socio-economic regenerative effects to the locality.

Planning Process

CSJ Planning acted as planning adivsors for a Private Finance Invitiative biud for a new acute hosptial development. The investment totalled at £374 million. The planning process was complex given the scale of the development; various different applications were submitted includng a masterplan. Due to the proposals height, CSJ Planning had to ensure the development was acceptable to Bristol City Council’s tall buildings’ policies. This was an issue of considerable sensitivity.
