University of Bristol – Department of Mathematics

CSJ Planning Consultants have submitted planning and listed building applications for the refurbishment, reconfiguration and extension to the Fry Building within the University of Bristol Precinct. The building forms part of the historic core to the University Precinct and lies adjacent to the landmark Wills Memorial Tower. This major refurbishment and extension project has been triggered by the imminent relocation of Biological Sciences from the Fry Building to the new Life Sciences Building located elsewhere in the University Precinct, which is scheduled for completion within the next month. This provides the opportunity for the Fry Building to be refurbished for use by the Department of Mathematics, which is currently located in a number of different buildings across the University Precinct. The scheme involves major improvement and enhancement to the setting of this Grade II Listed Building through the removal of car parking and the redesign of the external realm to facilitate a new entrance to the building. In addition, the modern accretions utilised for workshops within the southern courtyard will be removed and replaced by a lower ground floor lecture theatre with an accessible green roof. Working with Wilkinson Eyre Architects and a specialist Heritage Consultant, careful consideration has been given to enhancing the heritage asset through the removal of modern partitions and mezzanine floors, and the reinstatement of the original floor plan, wherever possible. It is hoped that both planning and listed building consents will be forthcoming in the summer of 2014, thereby allowing work to start on this major educational investment within the city.
