McArthurs Warehouse, Bristol

Quada (Harbourside) Ltd

Description

CSJ Planning gained planning permission for the re-development of McArthurs Warehouse, adjacent to the SS Great Britain, for a major mixed use, urban regeneration project comprising residential apartments, offices and retail floorspace. Planning permission and Conservation Area consent for demolition was given by Bristol City Council after a second call-in Inquiry had been cancelled by the Secretary of State and the jurisdiction for the decision given back to the Local Planning Authority. English Heritage, who instigated the call-in Inquiry, withdrew from the Inquiry process at a very late stage following their decision that there was not a case for the retention of the existing warehouse building, which although not listed they considered to be a building of merit in the Conservation Area, which it had, up to that point, insisted was viable to convert. Following the abandoned call-in Inquiry a partial award of costs was secured against English Heritage on the basis of their unreasonable behaviour with their very late withdrawal from the process.
