Major Refurbishment of 8-10 Berkeley Square, Bristol, Gains Consent

CSJ Planning Consultants have recently gained Listed Building Consent for a major refurbishment of the Faculty of Law at the University of Bristol which is located at 8-10 Berkeley Square. The Georgian buildings and extension that make up 8-10 Berkeley Square are part Grade I and part Grade II Listed and form part of one of the iconic Georgian Squares of Bristol. The buildings have been utilised by the University of Bristol for educational use since the 1960’s and this major refurbishment and modernisation was brought forward to provide enhanced facilities for the Faculty of Law. The buildings refurbishment included the provision of a Moot Court for teaching and training purposes as well as major strengthening of existing floors to the building in order to continue its educational use. CSJ Planning Consultants were responsible for the Heritage Impact Assessment and negotiations with the Conservation Officer of Bristol City Council and Historic England in finding solutions for the University’s requirements whilst maintaining the historic integrity of the building. Through an extensive pre-application process it was possible to achieve the vast majority of the University of Bristol’s operational requirements whilst restoring much of the building to its former historic plan layout. The project gained Listed Building Consent within the prescribed determination period and is set to start on site within the next few months.
